This summer, we weren’t planning to run any studio programs. Usually, our calendar is packed with festival planning, community canvases, face painting, and mural opportunities. But when our students asked for a space to create, we listened. Out of that request came a new pilot: Summer Studio Intensive.

Unlike a traditional class, this program was designed to provide students with a safe, supportive studio environment, access to a wide range of supplies, and the freedom to pursue their own artistic goals. For some, that meant finishing technical work for their portfolios. For others, it meant experimenting with new mediums. Meeting three times a week, students had the chance to stay creative, exchange feedback, and grow together as artists.
The impact was clear in their reflections. One student shared, “Yes, I had all the resources I needed and guidance.”- Zachary MacIsaac. Another said, “I learned how to make cleaner lines; I learned technical drawing skills to make my sketches more powerful.”-

Mason Lawrence, he also found the peer support invaluable: “Yes, people were always coming over and telling me ideas to reflect on my vision.”
Students also highlighted how the program shaped their artistic growth and mindset. “I started doing new mediums, so I feel like I built new skills with being flowy with my artwork.”- Cara Steward. Another reflected, “It taught me it’s okay to make mistakes and rework them.”- Zachary MacIsaac. One of the most powerful takeaways came from a student who shared, “The sense of community here, having an outlet for creating and being social, and finding people to relate to has impacted me.”- Amada Moundele. The program also fostered leadership, confidence, and accountability. Students shared; “It helped me keep a schedule on doing art and it helped me keep a focus on my practice.”- Malakai Xayadeth-Nou. “It has helped me become less afraid of being a leader or guide.”- Cloudy Rosas.
The Summer Studio Intensive showed us what’s possible when we listen to student needs and create space for exploration. What began as an experiment turned into a meaningful pilot that gave young artists tools, discipline, and confidence for their creative journeys. We’re grateful to everyone who took part, and we’re excited to see how this program continues to evolve in the future seasons.
