We are extremely grateful for the City of Lowell for providing the fund in supports of the execution of this three-wall mural. Without their support this wouldn't have been possible. With about 15 people (student artists and apprentices) and over 250 collective hours, we have finalized "Waves of Migration", a mural designed by student alumni Sorieya Mao and I which pays homage to the diaspora of various groups who have been forced to leave their homeland due to war, persecution, or economic reasons. In this mural we depict four distinct waves of migration that shaped Lowell:

  • 1820s–1850s: Irish (Building & Early Industrialization)

  • 1860s–1880s: French Canadian (Expansion)

  • 1890s–1920s: Greek, Polish, Portuguese, Armenian (Industrial Peak)

  • 1970s–Present: Cambodian, Southeast Asian, Latin American, and African (Refugee and Global Migration)

I was especially excited and grateful to help create a design for this mural, over the span of a week and a half, Sorieya and our apprentice team beautified these 3 walls, check out the before and after.
