Description:
Shadow Puppets Throw Serious Shade
With cell phone lights blazing, we will explore the world of shadow puppetry. From its history to modern practitioners, puppet fabrication to lighting effects, and world-building to story activation, this class will uncover the magic of an age-old art form.
By the end of this 10-week course, you will have a series of articulated 2D puppets, shadow sets or props, a visual narrative beat list, and a performance toolbox. You will leave with inspiration and practical skills to expand your creative possibilities. Bring your sketchbook and curiosity. It’s time to step into the darkness and shed new light on your 2D work.
Topics include:
- Inspiration through images and video
- Practical techniques such as puppet technology, sets, and stages
- Narrative development focused on visual storytelling and action
- Design and world-building through cohesive imagery and visual effects
- Performance considerations for live or recorded formats
Structure:
Each week will include inspiration, skill building, and a short share session. The pace will depend on student momentum. The focus will be on exploration and decision-making rather than technical perfection. On the final day, students will showcase their work but will not be required to perform. The goal is to leave with a performance-ready toolbox and a strong understanding of the design and fabrication process.
