A Mural Celebrating Nature's Power in the City: Urban Healing

Nikki Giraffo

In the heart of Lowell, a vibrant mural now tells a story of connection, growth, and healing. "Urban Healing", created by Refuge Art School students—former Stoklosa Middle Schoolers now aged 18-21—is a testament to the resilience of both nature and the human spirit.

This mural explores the healing properties of urban plants often dismissed as "weeds," but which hold incredible medicinal value. Plants like Milkweed, which attracts and sustains monarch butterflies; Yarrow, known for its ability to treat wounds, digestive issues, depression, and anxiety; and Mullein, a natural remedy for lung inflammation and ear infections, are just a few of the healing plants featured in this work. Students also explored the properties of Jewelweed, a plant that grows near poison ivy and helps relieve itching and irritation, and other herbs like Red Clover and Mug wort, which promote women's health and healing. These plants remind us that even in urban spaces, nature thrives and offers us remedies for our physical and emotional well-being.

At the center of the mural is Mother Earth, her flowing green hair symbolizing the vegetation that surrounds and sustains us, even in the most unexpected places. Her presence serves as a reminder that healing and growth are always within reach, no matter where we are.

Special thanks to Project Learn for Funding this Mural & Stoklosa Middle School for its perfect wall.

The process of bringing "Urban Healing" to life was a reflection of the plants it depicts—resilient, nurturing, and full of potential. By painting this mural, the students not only celebrated the overlooked beauty of urban flora but also reconnected with their own journeys of growth and healing.

This artwork stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration in Lowell, showing how art can unite communities, honor nature, and remind us of the power of connection—both to each other and to the world around us.
