OUR MISSION
Refuge Art School provides a safe, equitable space for underserved youth in Greater Lowell to explore their talents, grow as artists, and become community leaders through rigorous arts instruction, nurturing mentorship, and transformative creative experiences.
OUR STORY
Refuge began as a literal “refuge” for student artists seeking space, guidance and direction. After ten years, Refuge has grown to offer a unique combination of classes designed with empathy at the center. We believe that art is essential to the development of critical thinking skills, creative self-expression and empathetic practice.
Part of our mission is to identify talented local students in the community who may not be able to afford enrichment in the arts. We invite these scholarship students into Refuge Studio and encourage their development as artists and community members.
Additionally, we guide Refuge students who seek acceptance to colleges with individualized portfolio development, with our Portfolio students receiving acceptances to their top choice schools. We make it our mission to constructively build up our young artists and help ensure they put their strongest work forward in the professional world ahead of them.
Small class sizes, constructive feedback, and mentorship from practicing/teaching artists sets us apart from other art education settings. Artistic connection and a passion for community engagement carve a home in the hearts of our students and teachers.
